Best and worst case scenarios for Manchester United and Manchester City as 2022/23 openers revealed

Manchester United and Manchester City will know their Premier League schedule for 2022/23 at 9am Thursday.

While every Premier League team must play each of the other 19 teams twice, the day you play an opponent can have a significant impact on the outcome, so a favorable draw can help you out before the ball is even kicked.

We at Sports Dias have taken a look at the best and worst case scenarios for the two Manchester clubs’ opening fixtures of the new season.

United Best Screenplay

Leeds United

United haven’t had the best of times since Sir Alex Ferguson left Old Trafford, but they have been able to count on important wins against fierce rivals Yorkshire in recent years.

United won 4-2 and 5-1 against the Elland Road club the previous season, while the last time Leeds beat United in the league was in 2002.

The Saints’ last victory over United dates back to the 2016 season.

Southampton drew twice with United last season but Ralph Hasenhuttl will remember a 9-0 humiliation at Old Trafford in Covid times.

When Manchester United meet Fulham, goals are always guaranteed and they are usually beaten by United.

United beat the London club by four points in their previous Premier League encounter, and Fulham have not beaten Erik ten Hag’s new club since 2009.

United lost to Aston Villa in the Premier League last season, although the Villans had a poor record against United before that.

Villa last won in 2009, and United hope the September defeat was just a fluke.

Nottingham Forest

Forest haven’t played United in the league since 1999, and their fans will fondly remember the occasion.

The host team were humiliated by an 8-1 defeat at the City Ground. When these two sides meet, blowout wins are the norm, with United winning 4-0, 4-1 and 5-0 in previous seasons.

United Worst Case Scenario

Wanderers of Wolverhampton

Wolves have a decent head-to-head record against United.

Last season the two clubs won 1-0 in their two games, although in recent seasons the West Midlands side have always managed to take points from United.

Despite struggling bottom of the Premier League last season, Frank Lampard orchestrated a 1-0 win over Manchester United to help secure his place in the Premier League.

United have always struggled against the Merseyside club, with their last victory dating back to 2020.

Although an apparent option, Liverpool are United’s toughest opponents.

Recent beatings from fierce rivals, as well as the fact that United last won the league against Jurgen Klopp’s men in 2018, are reasons why Ten Hag will want to avoid Klopp from the start.

Brighton and Hove Albion

Brighton have improved year after year since joining the Premier League.

United’s beating on the south coast at the end of last season was a new low, and they will try to avoid another visit in the first round.

Manchester City

We don’t know whether to dwell too much on this. While United have performed well against their long distance rivals in recent years, they were beaten in both league fixtures last season.

Best Script in Town

AFC Bournemouth

Bournemouth newcomers will be terrified of meeting the reigning Premier League winners next season.

City have never lost to the Cherries, and everything indicates the Blues will maintain that form in 2022/23.

Fulham usually seem to suffer when they face the two Manchester clubs. They haven’t scored a league goal against City since 2013, and their last win against the Blues was in 2009.

The Caramels’ wins over City have been rare in recent years, with the most recent coming in 2017.

Lampard’s club struggled to survive last season, and they are likely to struggle again unless a huge investment is made.

Newcastle United

Eddie Howe’s side will need to tighten up defensively if they are to break their poor form against Manchester City.

Despite their potential investment, the Blues have scored 13 goals in their last three games against the Magpies and shouldn’t fear them next season.

West Ham United

Although the Hammers have improved in recent years, their record against City has not improved.

The last time West Ham beat City in the Premier League was in 2015.

Worst in Town Scenario

crystal palace

Guardiola’s side got just one point from Crystal Palace last season, and it looks like Patrick Vieira has found a way to overcome his former club.

If they maintain their current roster together, they could be a tough opponent again next season.

Leicester city

While City have topped the league, Leicester have beaten the Blues on several occasions.

The Foxes last won the Premier League with a 5-2 triumph in 2020, but they beat Pep’s men in the Community Shield last season.

Guardiola has frequently praised Jurgen Klopp for pushing his side and helping them become the powerhouse they are today.

Liverpool are never an easy game, and Pep is unlikely to want to wait until his side are fully fit before facing last season’s runners-up.

Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs have struggled to add to their trophy pile in recent years, but they succeeded against City.

Tottenham won both games against City last season and are gradually becoming Guardiola’s bogey side.

Wanderers of Wolverhampton

City have performed well against Wolves over the past two seasons, but the historic head-to-head record paints a different picture.

Wanderers have won 44 games to City’s 48, and they will seek revenge against the Blues after last season’s setbacks.
