- Chelsea’s pursuit of a striker next season could also see them sign Raheem Sterling
- Merson also thinks the Man City star could offer Chelsea options
Paul Merson has claimed Chelsea’s ambitious pursuits of Cristiano Ronaldo and Raheem Sterling this summer would be attractive options to bolster the Blues’ front line.
The Blues have struggled in recent seasons to find a main striker after successive summers that have seen big name arrivals such as Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku struggling to settle despite a combined cost of over 150m of pounds sterling.
Werner continues to hover around the first team after two years at the club following his £53m move from RB Leipzig, while Lukaku is now back at Inter Milan on loan despite signing from the Serie side A for £98m a year ago.
Cristiano Ronaldo has informed Manchester United that he wants to leave the club
But the Blues have reportedly been in talks with Cristiano Ronaldo over a sensational move for the Manchester United star who has told the club he wants to leave so he can continue playing in the Champions League aged 37 .
Former Arsenal midfielder Merson believes the move “ticks a box for Chelsea” but insisted any deal must be done as soon as possible.
“I think he might be tempted to leave the way it is – the way it is right now,” Merson wrote in his Sky column.
Paul Merson thinks Ronaldo would ‘tick all the boxes’ if he signed for Chelsea
“We hear that he wants to play in the Champions League, so I think it could happen.
“I think it will be a win-win situation if he goes [to Chelsea]. I think it needs to be sorted out as soon as possible – the season is in four or five weeks.
“It’s clear that Man Utd won’t be in the Champions League for a long time. I don’t know why it wasn’t nipped in the bud at the start.
The Blues are also on the hunt for Raheem Sterling who is also in the frame to move on
“It must have dragged on for so long. I would be a bit disappointed if I was a Man Utd fan.
Thomas Tuchel’s search for a goalscoring striker has also seen the Blues linked with Manchester City star Raheem Sterling.
New Chelsea owner Todd Boehly is trying to make an immediate impact on the club this summer and the Blues are in advanced talks for the England international.
Blues manager Thomas Tuchel keen to bolster his attacking options again this year
City are ready to let Sterling leave for a fee of around £50m as he has just one year left on his contract and there are no plans to extend it.
“I think Sterling would be a great recruit. I would worry about Man City selling Sterling because you sell a lot of goals,’ Merson added.
“People always come up to me, ‘He’s always in the second position to exploit them.’ if he leaves.
