Jose Mourinho has been asked about signing Nemanja Matic from Manchester United on a free transfer

Jose Mourinho has refused to be lured by speculation that he could be reunited with Nemanja Matic again this summer.

Manchester United face an exodus once the season is over and Matic will be among six players to leave Old Trafford for nothing when their contracts expire. Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata and Lee Grant will also follow him out.

Despite turning 34 in August, the defensive midfielder has shown no signs of stopping his career and has been heavily linked with a move to Roma from Mourinho before the summer. Matic has played more games for the Portuguese than any other manager as he was signed by him for Chelsea before being subsequently recruited to United.

However, although full of compliments for Matic, Mourinho hasn’t revealed whether he intends to sign the Serbian for a third time. He told Sky Sports: “I never like to talk about players.

“I don’t think it’s good for me, for the club, for the players. Everyone knows about my relationship with Nemanja, he’s one of the guys I trust. We worked together, we fought together at United and he’s a fantastic player. But that’s the kind of response that’s not good for me or the player.”

Matic’s contract at United was thought to run until 2023, so it was a shock when he announced he would be leaving the club last month. He wrote in a statement on Instagram: “After careful consideration, I have decided that this season will be my last with Manchester United.

“I have informed the board, manager and players of my decision. It has been a huge honor and privilege to play for this great club. Many thanks to the fans for their unwavering support.

“I will now give everything until the end of the season to help my teammates finish as strong as possible.”
