Leeds United’s Robin Koch and Manchester United trio in top 10 most expensive Premier League players this season

Leeds United have suffered a number of injuries this season and it has affected the club both on and off the pitch.

Marcelo Bielsa has had to deal with key players missing for the majority of the 2021/22 campaign, with the most notable absentees being Kalvin Phillips and Patrick Bamford.

Liam Cooper has also been out for an extended period and Los Blancos’ results have suffered as a result, collecting seven points less than at this stage last season.

Leeds had won nine games, up from just five after 21 games this season and they sat comfortably mid-table with little to no fear of relegation.

There was also a huge difference in the quality of performance as the Whites didn’t play with the same intensity, pace and energy in their game.

But that could be due to the number of injuries they have suffered, especially along their team’s spine.

Meanwhile, at the back, Diego Llorente, Pascal Struijk and Liam Cooper have all been unavailable for periods of the season, which has been reflected in Leeds’ dismal defensive record.

Another defender who has missed several matches is Robin Koch after suffering a serious pelvic problem on the first day of the season at Manchester United.

It forced the Germany international to miss more than three months of action and he eventually returned for the 4-1 loss to Arsenal in mid-December.

Although Koch has started every game since returning to the team, he ended up missing 15 games in all competitions, including the Carabao Cup Round of 16 and trips to Manchester City and Chelsea.

Robin Koch has made five Premier League appearances for Leeds United this season.

In fact, Koch has cost the club a substantial £3,699,836 through his injury struggles this season – which is the most expensive of any Premier League player.

A study of BonusFinder studied all injuries and illnesses suffered by players with results showing which clubs have lost the most money due to injury to their players this quarter.

Koch tops the list, with Everton midfielder Andre Gomes in second (£2,564,384) and Sead Kolasinac, who recently moved from Arsenal to Marseille, in third (£2,228,164).

Manchester United trio Raphael Varane, Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba feature in the top 10, while Chelsea record-breaking Romelu Lukaku cost the Blues £1,576,575 in wages by not playing.

The report used transfermarkt and spotrac to assemble this data.

It’s not just Koch who has cost Leeds big bucks this season, with Luke Ayling costing the club £666,740 while out after suffering a knee problem in tie 1 -1 against Newcastle United in September.

Sam Greenwood, Adam Forshaw, Bamford and Struijk are currently out, however, the quartet could all be back for the trip to Aston Villa after the winter break.

Next month could be vital against the backdrop of Los Blancos’ season, with games against Everton, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United to come before March.

Bielsa will be hoping to get the majority of his squad back for the rest of the campaign as they look to secure Premier League football for the third consecutive year.
