Manchester City beat Manchester United to sign centre-back Manuel Akanji, reveals Fabrizio Romano

Manchester City have beaten city rivals Manchester United to the signing of Manuel Akanji, it has now been revealed.

The summer transfer window has been one of the big changes for both Manchester clubs.

All Gabriel Jesus, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Raheem Sterling and Fernandinho have left the Etihad Stadium, with the former two both joining Arsenal in big-money moves.

As for arrivals, Julian Alvarez and Erling Haaland have significantly strengthened the Premier League champions in an attacking sense, with Kalvin Phillips, Sergio Gomez and Stefan Ortega Moreno reporting improvements in defence.

At Manchester United, and there were big money moves for Antony and Casemiro at the start of Erik ten Hag’s reign, but now it looks like a name has been overlooked by decision-makers at Old Trafford.

According to information of Fabrizio Romano, Manuel Akanji was also an option for Manchester United in defense this summer.

However, the man responsible for identifying the Swiss international at Old Trafford was no longer at the club for a serious deal to progress.

Roman Explain that the former Borussia Dortmund centre-back was mainly admired by former caretaker manager Ralf Rangnick, who had already left his post at Old Trafford.

Subsequently, Manchester City moved for him late in the window, in a deal that is proving even more important for Pep Guardiola and his team with each passing day.

Akanji’s signing was further highlighted as taking on greater importance because of the injuries.

On Monday night, Manchester City’s John Stones appeared to suffer a hamstring injury while on international duty with England.

The severity of the issue remains unknown at this stage, although an update is expected to be provided by Pep Guardiola on Friday afternoon.

Elsewhere, Aymeric Laporte has also recovered from surgery undertaken earlier this summer and continues to recover ahead of a tough string of matches throughout October.

Next up for Manchester City is the 188th Manchester Derby, where they host neighbors United at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
