One of the most iconic and popular clubs on the planet, Manchester United enjoys a massive fan base around the world, including in the United States.
The club holds the record for most league titles in England and was the first English team to win the European Cup (now the Champions League). They have a briefcase full of silverware and a long list of game icons who have played for the club, including George Best, David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and USA goalkeeper Tim Howard. With their history of success and host of star players, it’s no wonder many American fans look to the Red Devils when choosing a Premier League team to support.
The club has been owned by the American Glazer family since 2005, which also owns the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While Glazers’ stewardship has come with five Premier League titles and a Champions League triumph, it has not been without resistance, as to this day some United supporters protest the ownership in wearing the green and yellow colors of Newton Heath LYR FC (the original name of the club when it was founded in 1878) at matches. The protest against Glazer’s ownership went so far as to spark the founding of a dissident fan-owned club called FC United of Manchester in 2005, which aims to return the game to its working-class roots.
United play matches at the iconic Old Trafford, which at 74,000 is the largest club stadium in England and the eleventh largest stadium in Europe.
