In an exclusive update, David Orstein of The Athletic have revealed that on July 15, Barcelona told Frenkie de Jong that they had evidence of criminality surrounding the contract given to him by their former board. The transfer insider also revealed that the current Barcelona board believe they have grounds to take legal action against everyone involved in the deal. They asked the Dutchman to cancel his current deal and return to the terms of his previous one.

Barcelona are currently in the midst of serious financial problems, and selling De Jong is one of the ways they are looking to solve.
In a new report, Ornstein has revealed that the Spanish side believe they have found evidence of criminal activity by all parties involved in signing De Jong’s contract renewal in 2020.
Barcelona sent a letter to the Dutchman about the matter in July, which reportedly told the midfielder he was able to pursue criminal charges as he sought to establish where the blame lay. The Catalan giants also have similar talks with Gerard Pique and Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
United Chasing De Jong with alternatives lined up
United have been chasing Frenkie de Jong for some time.
On July 14, it was reported that they got Barcelona to accept an offer, and since then it’s been a matter of convincing him to move to Old Trafford.

This issue remains unresolved despite it being almost a month since United made their successful bid, and as such they are now exploring potential alternatives.

More recently, Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot was revealed as a potential United target, and he has now been reported that they have reached an agreement in principle with the Italian side on the transfer of the Frenchman.
