Manchester United youngster Tahith Chong suffers another injury blow while on loan at Birmingham

Birmingham City head coach Lee Bowyer has confirmed Tahith Chong, on loan from Manchester United, suffered a hamstring injury, just over a month after returning from a four-day layoff month for injury.

The Dutchman, who joined the Championship side on loan for the duration of the season in July, was sent off just before the hour mark in their 1-0 win over rivals West Bromwich Albion at St Andrew’s on Sunday after -noon. After the match, Chong’s early withdrawal from the contest was downplayed by Bowyer, who insisted he remove her for nothing more than a precaution.

But the Birmingham boss, awaiting his side’s trip to the in-form Nottingham Forest on Saturday, has confirmed Chong has tweaked his hamstrings meaning he now faces a new spell on the key. However, Bowyer hopes the player on loan from United will play again before the end of the season next month.

Bowyer said: “Tahith, unfortunately, twisted his hamstrings a bit. When he came out [vs West Brom] he was like, ‘No, no, give me another five minutes’ and I was like ‘no, no’.

“Fortunately, I didn’t listen to Tahith and hopefully we get him back for the last two games.”

Chong’s latest setback came just over four weeks after he returned to the Championship following a serious thigh injury that required surgery. The winger was ruled out between late October and late February.

Initially he threatened to end his season which means this latest setback, just weeks after defying the odds and making a comeback, will have left the youngster greatly frustrated, who recently had his contract with United extended by a year. When fit, he has been excellent for the Blues this season, producing a string of eye-catching performances.

In total, he racked up 19 appearances for the club, scoring one goal and collecting three assists. His only goal in Birmingham colors came on his first start since returning from his long injury absence, finding the back of a clear 2-1 win over Bristol City at Ashton Gate.
